It’s the start of another school year for
thousands of students throughout the state of Hawaii. And for the first
graders at Lanakila Elementary, a special surprise greeted them on their
first day back. The students came, they got to see the surprises on the stairway.
I don’t think any of them anticipated that they were going to be those large
backpacks with all those goodies inside. And they were just very excited. For the
past eight years, Servco Pacific has participated in its annual Backpack
School Drive, providing essential school supplies to keiki around the island.
You know the enthusiasm that you see with the children or the kids that they’re
getting something like a backpack, which for some of us may
be so simple, but for them it’s such a big thing for them, so it’s
great to get them started off in the school year with a lot of enthusiasm. We’re
a very diverse community. We are 70% free and reduced lunch, so we’re
a title one school, as well as a pretty high population of ELL or English
Language Learners and they come to us sometimes with different understandings
about what education is and how it can propel them forward in the future and so
something like this kind of just gets them jump-started. Over the past few
months, Servco employees collected a variety of school supply items for the
five schools that will benefit from the Backpack Drive this year. This campaign
is part of the company’s overall commitment to giving back through its
Team Serve committee. It was great because employees are
giving it. We always think that we’re always a part of the community and it’s
just one way to give back. We’re celebrating our 100th year anniversary
in a couple of years, so Servco has been in Hawaii in the community for
such a long period of time and the community’s been great to us and this is
just part of our giving back to the community.
We appreciate from the the hearts of all of my teachers and staff, the things that
they’ve done for our students and in cultivating their learning and
encouraging their success and really demonstrating what it means to give back
and pay it forward.
