(KC) (KC) DO YOU REMEMBER HAVING TO CARRY THOSE HEAVY BOOKS AROUND AT SCHOOL? WELL NOW THEY’VE GOT A LOT OF BOOKS ON COMPUTERS SO KIDS DON’T HAVE TO CARRY AROUND AS MUCH. (MAGGIE) BUT KIDS STILL HAVE TO STAY MINDFUL OF HOW MUCH OF A LOAD THAT THEY’RE CARRYING AND HOW IT CAN AFFECT THEIR BODIES. OUR MORGAN KOZIAR JOINS US NOW WITH SOME TIPS ON CHOOSING THE RIGHT BACKPACK. (MORGAN) GOOD MORNING GUYS! THAT’S RIGHT IT’S ALMOST TIME TO START BACK TO SCHOOL! AND A GOOD START TO THE SCHOOL YEAR STARTS WITH A GREAT BACKPACK. WE’RE HERE AT THE ALTOONA CHIROPRACTIC LIFE CENTER WITH DR. BRETT FYE – DR. FYE THANKS SO MUCH FOR JOINING US THIS MORNING WE’RE TALKING ABOUT BACKPACKS BECAUSE I’M SURE YOU SEE PATIENTS WITH BACK TROUBLES AND CARRYING AROUND A HEAVY LOAD CAN MAKE AN IMPACT ON KIDS. BRETT: RIGHT! AND WE WANT KIDS TO START OUT RIGHT! SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE WE’RE PROTECTING THEM BOTH NOW AND IN THE LONG RUN. MORGAN: AND HOW DO WE KNOW – BACKPACKS I SEE WE’VE GOT DIFFERENT KINDS HERE I SEE DRAWSTRINGS I KNOW SOMETIMES YOU SEE THAT BUT EVEN THESE KIDS CAN WEAR THEM DOWN TO THEIR BOTTOMS WITH THE STRAPS HOW DO KNOW WHAT ARE SOME GOOD TIPS? BRETT: RIGHT! SO FOR STARTERS WE DON’T WANT A BACKPACK WITH JUST THIN STRIPS – THESE KINDS OF BACKPACKS ARE NOT THE RIGHT KIND OF BACKPACKS. THESE KINDS OF BACKPACKS ARE THE MORE CORRECT BACKPACK. WE WANT A NICE PADDING ON THE SHOULDER STRAP, A NICE PADDING ON THE BACK, WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO OPEN IT UP WE WANT TO PLACE OUR HEAVIEST BOOKS TOWARS THE BACK SO THEY SIT HERE AND OUR LIGHTER BOOKS GO ON TOP. AND THEN WHAT WE WANT THEM TO DO IS WE WANT THEM TO FIT THE KIDS RIGHT. SINCE EVERY KID IS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT THEY COME ADJUSTABLE STRAPS SO BELLA IS GOING TO SHOW US HOW IT GOES – GOES RIGHT OVER HER SHOULDERS WE MAKE SURE THESE STRAPS ARE NICE AND TIGHT AND THAT THEY FIT – THE BACKPACK STAYS NICE AND TIGHT AGAINST HER BACK. AND WE’RE NOT DIPPING DOWN AND WE’RE NOT REALLY PULLING DOWN ON THOSE SHOULDERS. AND A GOOD RULE OF THUMB IS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE DON’T HAVE WEIGHT IN OUR BACKPACK THAT’S MORE THAN 10% OF THEIR BODY WEIGHT. SO IF BELLA WEIGHS 70LBS. WE DON’T WANT MORE THAN 7LBS. IN THE BACKPACK. SO HERE’S ANOTHER EXAMPLE HERE’S KEINIE HE’S GOING TO SHOW US HOW A BIGGER BACKPACK FITS – THIS ONE’S A LITTLE BIT TALLER SAME THING WE HAVE THE GOOD PADDED STRAP UP OVER HIS SHOULDERS – WE MAKE SURE THIS IS NICE AND TIGHT AGAINST HIS BACK AND THAT’S HOW WE WANT THEM TO FIT. MORGAN: I LIKE THAT! THIS ONE’S GOT A POCKET FOR THEIR WATER BOTTLE WHICH CAN ALSO ADD A LOT OF WEIGHT TOO – JUST THOSE BOOKS YOU SAID ALONE WAS 7LBS. SO IT REALLY STARTS TO ADD UP. BRETT: IT CAN! A WATER BOTTLE COULD WEIGH A POUND OR TWO! MORGAN: YEAH, YOU DO HAVE TO WATCH OUT FOR THAT BECAUSE LIKE YOU SAID IT STARTS YOUNG YOU DON’T ALWAYS SEE SYMPTOMS WHEN THEY’RE KIDS BUT IT CAN HAVE LONG TERM EFFECTS. HOW SHOULD WE KNOW WHEN IS A GOOD TIME TO COME AND SEE YOU? BRETT: SO REALLY WHAT WE WATCH FOR IN KIDS THIS AGE IS IF WE’RE GETTING A LOT OF PULL IN THIS BACK PACK WE’RE GOING TO GET A LOT OF PULL IN THE SHOULDER- A LOT OF PULL IN THE NECK MAYBE SOME HEADACHES UH THAT’S WHAT WE WANT TO KEEP OUR EYE ON.
