Backpacking & Camping Tips : Picking a Backpack

Hi, I’m Richard Fields. In this clip we’re
going to be talking about how to choose a backpack. There’s two basic types. One is
the external frame backpack which you might be more familiar with the exposed aluminum
railing. That kind of a pack allows more ventilation for your back, it’s less expensive, and it’s
much easier to access your equipment in your pack. The disadvantages of it, it’s not quite
as comfortable to carry and doesn’t carry quite as much of a load. Your internal frame
backpacks which are of newer design, are better padded, closer to your body, which means closer
to your center of gravity, and you can carry a larger load. They are a little less convenient
when you’re trying to access your equipment, but it’s a trade off that often people find
well worth while. When you’re choosing a backpack, you’re going to have to consider what your
needs are. Are you going to be going on extended trips or just day hikes? And that’s going
to dictate the size. If you have to err, err on the size of slightly larger. You can usually
compress a pack down some, but if it’s too small and you’re overloading it, it’s going
to be uncomfortable to carry and difficult to get to your equipment. A good backpacking
store, your local retailer can help you get the proper fit and a pack that will address
your needs best. And that’s how to choose a backpack.
