How to Choose the Right Backpack | Pottery Barn Kids

Hi, my name’s Rachel, and I’m a
product designer for Pottery Barn Kids. Backpacks are a great way to carry books and supplies
to and from school. They also serve as a fashion statement. Pottery Barn Kids offers three collections of backpacks:
the Fairfax, the McKenzie, and the Brannan. Within each collection we feature three sizes:
the Pre-K for your three to five year old, the 7-plus, and the 10-plus. Each collection has
a unique aesthetic which strikes the perfect balance between function and fashion. Each collection
also has bottle pockets, a laptop pocket, MP3 pocket, and tons of additional storage. The 7-plus and the 10-plus fit your child’s 3-ring binder. Fairfax is our core gear collection. It’s classic,
preppy, and functional. Extended zipper pulls make the bag easy to open and close. Metal D-rings are a great feature to the Fairfax collection. They give kids the opportunity to customize their bags
with key chains. The McKenzie collection has all the bells and whistles,
bright prints, and bold colors. This collection features clips on the front of the bag,
great for attaching one of our lunch bags, a towel, or a coat. It also has reflective webbing for added safety. The Brannan collection is sleek, lightweight, and minimal. It features cool color-blocking and reflective piping. All of our backpacks offer wide, ergonomically contoured shoulder straps, as well as padded back-panels for added comfort while carrying. Be sure to adjust the straps. Make sure the backpack fits snugly
against your child’s back. Encourage your child to use both shoulder straps.
This will ensure that the weight of the bag is evenly distributed. When packing your child’s backpack, place the heaviest items in first, and closest to the back. It is important to know your child’s limits. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends
that your child carry no more than 15% of his or her body weight. Following this rule, a 60 pound child
should carry a backpack that weighs no more than 9 pounds. Here’s an idea; if a small child needs to carry lots of books and supplies, you may want to choose one of our rolling backpacks. As a general rule, the backpack should be no wider
than your child’s torso, and should not hang lower than four inches below the waist. Hopefully these tips will help you choose the right
backpack for your child.

  1. Yes! I really like your design but are they PVC and BPA free? As a parent, I believe that this is more important than it's design and function. Thanks.

  2. Should I put my kids name on the back? I already know my kids name. Everyone at school knows my kids name. Is the name just for strangers?
