SCOTT WALKER, CHIEF METEOROLOGIST MARGARET ORR, AND SPORTS WITH FLETCHER MACKEL. MARGARET: ONE MAN’S TRASH IS ANOTHER MAN’S TREASURE. SCOTT: WDSU REPORTER SUSAN ISAACS EXPLAINS HOW ONE LULING MAN IS USING PLASTIC BAGS TO CHANGE THE WORLD. WAYNE ABADIE HAS A THING FOR BAGS. I HAVE A FEELING I’M GOIN TO BE OVERWELMED WITH BAGS. IT STARTED WITH CROCHETING AS A CHILD. MY MOTHER USE TO CROCHET AND SHE WOULD TRY TO TEACH ME TO CROCHET AND I COULD NEVER GOT THE HANG OF CROCHETING. I USE TO MAKE LITTLE BRACELETS OUT OF THE PLASTIC. HE DECIDED TO BRING HIS CRAFT TO HIS CHURCH. MY WIFE AND I WERE TALKING ONE NIGHT AND THEY WERE LOOKING FOR A PROJECT TO DO FOR THEIR SERVICE PROJECT AND I SAID I HAVE AN IDEA. WAYNE’S IDEA WAS TO CROCHET SLEEPING MATTS OUT OF PLASTIC BAGS, AND IT SNOWBALLED FROM THERE. I WAS TALKING TO MY NEIGHBOR ONE DAY, MY WIFE WAS SAID OUR BEDROOM HAS PLASTIC, WAYNES ALWAYS PLAYING IN IT AND MAKING PLARN, MAKING SLEEPING MATS AND THE NEIGHBOR SAID I’VE BEEN TRYING TO DO THAT FOR A WHILE. TO ME IT WAS LIKE A WAY OF GIVING BACK THAT DIDN’T TAKE UP A LOT OF TIME. WAYNE’S INTEREST IN PLASTIC BAGS IS NOW A HOBBY THAT NOT ONLY BENEFITS THE LESS FORTUNATE, BUT IT’S ALSO ECO FRIENDLY. I MAKE THEM ABOUT 3-4 FEET WIDE. I’M MAKING THE MATS, I MADE ABOUT 14-16 OF THEM AND IT DONATED THEM TO THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH ON CANAL STREET. THE CHURCH WOULD THEN DISTRIBUTE THE MATS TO THE MISSION. I GOT TO READ AN ARTICLE FROM THAT MISSION TALKING ABOUT HOW QUICKLY THEY WERE DISTRIBUTING AND HOW WELL THEY WERE RECEIVED AND I THOUGHT TO MYSELF, WELL I CAN’T STOP NOW. WAYNE HAS MADE A TOTAL OF NINETEEN MATS, 15 OF THOSE WENT TO THE MISSION. IT’S A VERY GRATIFYING FEELING KNOWING THAT THE LITTLE BIT OF TIME THAT I TAKE TO DO THIS COULD CHANGE SOMEONES LIFE. I’M NOT GOING TO LIE, THAT DOES EFFECT ME. WAYNE’S MESSAGE IS SIMPLE. DOING A LITTLE SOMETHING IN ORDER TO CHANGE THE WORLD, PEOPLE THINK YOU HAVE TO BUILD HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS OR VOLUNTEER AT A SOUP KITCHEN WHEN YOU CAN ACTUALLY JUST DO A LITTLE SOMETHING. WAYNE HOPES TO CONTINUE TO SPREAD HIS MESSAGE ON REPURPOSING FOR A GREATER PURPOSE. ON YOU SIDE, SUSAN ISAACS, WDSU NEWS. SCOTT: SATURDAY IS CHANGE THE WORLD DAY THROUGH THE METHODIST CHURCH. WAYNE IS ASKING THE PUBLIC TO COME OUT AND MAKE MATTS. THE EVENT STARTS AT 4:00 AT NEW

  1. I really wish more people would do this. It's basically one single stitch done over and over again. I have carpel tunnel and tennis elbow in both my arms and I can still do this. So far I have made 4 mats in 2 years. Might not seem like much but that's 24,000 bags that won't end up in the landfills.
