Sierra Designs Backcountry Quilt 800F 2 Season

Designed as an alternative to traditional
sleeping bags, the Sierra Designs Backcountry Quilt 800 Fill 2 Season is a lightweight and
compressible quilt that is meant for warmer weather backcountry adventures where you still
want some coverage and some comfort. Let’s take a look at its features. The first thing to talk about with the quilt
here is the insulation. It has got an 800 fill duck Dridown insulation. And what that
means that Dridown is just that each individual plume of down is actually treated with a water
resistant coating so that it resists moisture longer. So it stays drier 10 times longer
than traditional down and if it does become wet, it will dry out 33 percent faster. And
another nice feature is that if it does become wet, it is still going to maintain its loft
and insulation. So unlike traditional down which as soon as it becomes wet it is essentially
useless and it doesn’t insulate at all, the Dridown insulation is a really nice feature
that allows this to perform in all kinds of conditions. As the name suggests this quilt is a two season
quilt. It has got a little bit of a range as far as temperatures go. The EN or European
norm comfort rating for this bag is 38 degrees. So that is a men’s 38 degrees. So that is
going to be the comfortable limit, right around that 38 to 40 degree mark. It does have a
lower limit rating of 28 degrees, so at the cold-est this bag will keep you warm or this
quilt will keep you warm. It is about 28 degrees Fahrenheit. So that is a European norm men’s
comfort and lower limit rating. This quilt was designed as a longer, wider
option for those who want a little more sprawl-ing comfort in the backcountry. It is meant to
essentially perform like your comforter at home. You know, you have mobility and movement
without having that constricted feel and you still get some warmth in those warmer temperatures.
So it is nice and wide at the shoulders. It has got some neat features up there we will
talk about and it tapers down into an insulated foot box which we will check out in a second
here. It has also got a nice, lightweight trail weight of about one pound, eight ounces,
so it is really lightweight and really compressible, too. Some of those neat features that we have got
going on are an enclosed foot box. So if I flip this up here the foot box is actually
completely closed in. So you have got a fully in-sulated foot box that is going to give
you really good protection down around the feet. Coming up it is an open back so the
rest of the quilt is going to be open throughout the entire back, designed to work in unison
with a sleeping pad. But up at the top here the corners are kind of overlapped. They are
essentially meant to be hand pockets. So you can put your hands into these pockets and
kind of maneuver the bag as you want to while you are sleeping without, you know, losing
it or having it fall away from where you are laying. It does have this neat hood, too. So for those
that like to sleep on their back, it has got kind of a tuck away hood that is insulated
so you can kind of stow your head up there and get some warmth. So if you have to batten
it down on those cooler nights, you can get some head insulation, too, with the nice port
here for your face so you can breathe without, you know, feeling like you are suffocating. We have got some neat features on the quilt
that allow it to maintain comfort throughout the night without being tight or too loose. This quilt does come with its own stuff sack
and storage sack. So we have got a light-weight stuff sack to pack away the quilt when you
are hiking or, you know, if you are traveling. It is a nice lightweight design there with
a draw cord at the top. But if you are just storing the item, you should store it loosely
as to not compress that insulation. ANd they do include a nice, lightweight mesh storage
sack. So a nice loose storage there. You can throw that in the closet or in some little
dry space. You have got two storage options with the backcountry quilt. So there you have it. It is the Sierra Designs
Backcountry Quilt 800 Fill 2 Season. It is a nice lightweight, compressible option with
a nice assortment of features designed for your warmer weather backcountry adventures.
