The Goat with Three Kids – COMENIUS ROMANIAN STORY

THE GOAT WITH THREE KIDS There was once a mother goat
that had three little sons. One day, she had to go to the forest
to get some grass for her hungry kids. So she warned them not to open
to anyone while she was out. To be recognized, she told them that
she would sing a special song for them. But one wolf, no other than the goat’s
godfather, overheard their conversation and tried to sing the same song. He asked them to open the door,
but the three kids did not recognize the voice as being that of their
own mother and they did not open. So the wolf went to the blacksmith and
asked him to sharpen his teeth and tongue in order to make him sound more like the
goat’s voice and came back to the house. The oldest of the three brothers opened the
door, allowing the wolf to enter the house. This way, the wolf ate two
of the kids, who were hiding: one behind the entrance door and
the other one behind an old chest. The wolf searched the house
to find the younger brother, but he could not find him as he was
hiding inside the chimney of the stove. After a while, mother goat returned home and
found only the youngest kid sad, but alive. She began to think of the best way to
punish the wolf for killing her dear kids. She began cooking all kinds
of delicious dishes. There was a deep large hole close to
her house and the goat made a big fire inside it, covering it with
some tree branches and leaves. She also made a wax chair
and put it above the hole. Then, she went to invite
the wolf to that feast. The wolf accepted happily,
without any suspicion. Therefore the wolf sat down on the
wax chair and began eating all. All of a sudden the chair melted and the
wolf fell into the hole and lost his life.
