Victoria Beckham presents her new SS14 handbag, The Quincy.

>>Hi, I’m Tina Craig, here in New York to
talk to a group of fashion insiders as part of the new Skype Conversation series. And
today we have one very special guest, and with her help we’ll be turning our attention
to a subject close to all our hearts, especially my heart, the art of the handbag. Hello everyone
and thanks so much for joining me.>>Thank you.>>And here we have Victoria Beckham, creative
director of Victoria Beckham, and we have Saskia Terzani from London part of her role
as Head of Global Sales for Victoria Beckham she is responsible for merchandising the collection,
working with retailers and the E-commerce team to present the collection for sales.
Hi Saskia.>>Hi.>>How are you?>>Hi everybody.>>And from here in New York City fashion and
style director for Vanity Fair Jessica Diehl. Hi JD.>>Hi, how are you?>>Great. Great to have you here. Victoria,
we’re sitting here in New York City. What does New York mean to you, you must love it
here?>>I love coming to New York. I love America,
I lived in America for 6 years, it’s always a real treat to come here. There’s a real
energy here, there’s a real, a real buzz.>>And Jessica, what do you think makes New
York so special?>>You can get anything done in 24 hours or
less any day of the week and I think it contributes to that energy and that idea that you really
want to work when you’re here.>>And Victoria you’ve always loved fashion,
you’ve had this great passion for it, was it hard to make that initial move into fashion,
as a designer?>>You know, it’s what I always dreamed of
doing, it really is, and, I wanted to do it when the time was right. I was very focused,
I had a very, very tiny team around me and made this possible for me. It’s not just me
doing this you know, I have a great set of people around me. So I was nervous, I was
totally aware of peoples preconceptions. It wasn’t about me the celebrity, it was about
the product.>>I think everybody kind of stopped talking
the minute they saw the first dress. I mean you put it on and you just go, ‘oh wait, this
is a fabulous dress’.>>Yeah you know I love women, I want to empower
women, I want to make women feel confident and sexy, and good about themselves. I’m having
so much fun. I’m so lucky to have a job that doesn’t feel like a job, I love what I do.>>And you can tell. You can tell, I love watching
your Twitter feed.>>Yeah.>>You know you’re working and then you stick
a big old bag on your head as a hat. It’s really fun to watch you really there and I
think people really appreciate that.>>Yeah you know when people say ‘what’s the
new cool way to carry your bag’, it is on your head. I’m just putting it out there,
it is on your head.>>Yeah, forget the, forget holding it on your
arm, it’s not arm candy it’s now head candy.>>Everybody is doing it, I’m just saying.>>Before we leave all these bags will be on
our heads. You got one over there Jess?>>My whole team wear them.>>Over the head, I would go for.>>You’re often photographed carrying one of
your own designs and are known for practically inventing new ways of holding a handbag. Shall
I show people.>>Oh yeah, you do your, yeah.>>Ok this is, this is, this is how we hold
a handbag. Right, this is how we do it?>>Beautiful.>>So are there any other new ways that you’re…?>>Do you know, I mean, I don’t know. I like
to play with accessories and I love to play with fashion, I really do. And I always keep
it quite simple but I love to have fun and, and try new things. The other thing I love
about this bag particularly, this is the ‘Quincy’ and Quincy is actually my niece, so it has
a little special meaning.>>Ohhhh.>>For me what I love about this bag is it
looks good but it’s also really practical you can really fit a lot in this bag.>>And Jessica, what do you think the secret
is to her success?>>I think the reason, I for one love them,
is there’s a certain simplicity and functionality and elegance about them, without screaming
statement bag.>>Exactly.>>There’s a certain ‘in the know’ feeling
about them. At the same time I think it offers, you know just a really stylish alternative
that is just so clearly luxury without screaming a brand which I actually think, as a consumer,
is wonderful. I don’t want to be walked around by my X, Y, Z bag, I want someone to say ‘you
have a fabulous bag, what is it’?>>So Saskia, it’s been over three years since
the launch of the Victoria handbag range, what’s been the feedback on the range from
the consumer?>>Well the consumers have really followed,
I think, the brand and the journey towards accessories. We find that where they were
being bought initially as a compliment than ready to wear, now they have entire walls
dedicated to them in the major department stores, the customers have really responded
to the quality of the bag.>>Okay so Victoria, as a fashion designer
where so you get your inspirations and ideas from?>>You know, it can be different things. I’m
so fortunate that that though I live in London I travel a lot and I can get inspired from
so many things you know, my family inspire me, my kids, my husband. Travelling to different
countries you know, I do lots of in store events with my retail partners all around
the world and I love to get in the fitting rooms with my customer and find out what she
wants and what she likes. What she likes about herself, how she wants to feel, and then I
want to add a strong fashion message to that. I also love the fact that with my website
my customer can see my brand through my eyes…>>Right>>…which is a real luxury. I can reach so
many territories and people can have a brand experience.>>And to what degree do the other, because
you know you’re a busy Mum of four children, you’re a wife, you’re a friend, you know,
parts of your life that cross over that provide inspiration?>>Yeah absolutely, when David uses my phone
and he takes a look at my pictures and you know he’s always, you know, quite confused
as to why I’ve taken pictures of what I have. I mean you can get inspired everyday.>>Of course.>>So my eyes are always, are always open,
and I enjoy that.>>Now Jessica, a quick question for you, what’s
your quick, go to bag for daily? Your favourite?>>My favourite actually in real life is the
Liberty because I can fit everything in it and it’s actually never, ever let me down.>>I have the Liberty, and we actually chose
it as our best tote of 2013 because it’s such a simple, chic tote.>>Wow thank you, thank you.>>And thank you Jessica that’s a huge compliment
from you thank you.>>I love it.>>I really appreciate it.>>So Victoria.>>Yes>>Do you remember when and where you got your
very first bag?>>Well my first bag was actually a Gucci carrier
bag that my Mother’s friend gave me because she knew that I loved, designer brands. But
I mean, I couldn’t afford anything.>>How old were you?>>I was at school, I was probably about 11
or 12 and it was actually a plastic bag and I used to put all of my schoolbooks in it
and carry it to school, proudly. And I remember it was dark green Gucci bag with the gold
writing, and it stretched and stretched and stretched and then the bottom of it fell out.
So that was my first, my first bag, designer bag.>>Ok guys, this is going to be fun. This is
a quick fire round of questions, and we’re going to start with you Victoria. In three
words, three words only, what three things are we guaranteed to find in your handbag?>>iPhone, credit card, make up bag.>>And, ok, Saskia, you?>>I have passport, wallet and make up bag.
I don’t know why I>>A passport.>>I’ve got this, I always have to have my
passport in case I>>In case you get deported?>>In case you get deported!>>And Jessica, three things that are in your
bag?>>iPhone, iPhone charger, credit cards. That’s
about it, I live for my charger.>>A spare charger for your iPhone?>>That’s a good one, that is a good one.>>Yeah that is. Ok, mine was lip gloss, credit
card, iPhone. Never without it. Alright how many bags do you actually own? The truth.>>I mean listen I’m lucky, I can have all
the samples.>>Oh that’s true.>>And when we have a current collection and
the press team have finished photographing it then I can use them.>>Do you have a sister?>>I do have a sister, yeah.>>Well you have another one now so when you’re
done with them, this is where they go.>>Yeah.>>Into the sister’s closet.>>But all women like to collect bags don’t
they?>>They do!>>There is not a woman alive that does not
like a bag.>>It’s true. It’s, it’s the one universal
language you can talk about with people.>>Absolutely.>>Saskia how many bags do you own?>>I’ve not counted otherwise my husband is
going to have a number to throw back at me and say ‘well you’ve got too many bags, you’ve
got X number’, so I just don’t count.>>Nobody wants to say. Ok Jessica, JD?>>I’m gonna go there’s probably around a hundred.>>Yeah, ok.>>So, I hope nobody actually heard me say
that, I just said it out loud. I think it’s around a hundred which I don’t think is actually
that bad.>>And you’re next bag is going to be the Quincy?
Seriously obsessed.>>Yeah no question.>>Well thank you everyone for coming.>>Yes thank you so much.>>Thank you Victoria.>>Jessica.>>Thank you so much ladies.>>Saskia have a good night in London.>>Have a safe flight back.>>Thank you very much, thank you ladies.>>And don’t forget there’s more fashion industry
insights and exclusives on The Skype Collaboration Project. So go take a look and get involved.
You’re coming with me.
